COMEDIAN and show host Errol Fabien turned down a job hosting a calypso show because he was not allowed to say anything negative about the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM).
Fabien in a Facebook post claimed that the promoter who he also considers his friend was “as serious as a heart attack” when he told him “no anti-PNM jokes.”
Fabien posted that the issue was not the promoter who remains a friend and employer but in what he said.
“He is emboldened by the little people in this administration who will withhold his hand out if they come to the show and feel offended… and whilst it is his money he is spending and he has the right to demand what he is paying for, why call me?
Fabien continued, “I am who I am. I have hosted Calypso shows since 1985… I have hosted them throughout the English-speaking world. A calypso show is where, between the Calypsonians and the MC, we deal with all societal goings on. If it becomes a pro-PNM charade then it is not of the people. It is of the few. Calypso is of the people. I need the work, but I need my manhood more. I did not do the show.”
Speaking further with AZP News on the issue, Fabien, who has contested the St Joseph constituency as an independent candidate, said politics was dividing society.
He acknowledged that persons paying their monies have all right to have their specific requirements met.
Fabien, the current Communications Director for the National Transformation Alliance, said, “Politics have gotten into too much of our society. Apart from party politics, you have church politics, maxi-taxi politics and all kind of politics. And it is retarding the movement in society.”
He said if there was one party saying, they want the best for the country and another also saying the same thing, parties should not be fighting as they were and instead work together for the improvement of all.
In the end, it was the average citizen who bore the consequences, Fabien added.
