FORMER Strategic Services Agency (SSA) director retired major Roger Best was a surprised at the United National Congress (UNC) in Debe on Tuesday.
Best told the media after the meeting that he was invited by former Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal and “decided to come show my support.”
Asked if he was supporting the UNC, Best replied, “I am supporting righteousness. I believe righteousness is the key and I think everybody in Trinidad and Tobago should stand for righteousness. I am a patron of the state.”

He said many people in the UNC supported him and “the oppressed and I am very thankful for them.”
Best asked, “If you are a member of a society and the society is going through difficult times, would you, as the leader, not want to go through difficult times yourself?
“Is it righteous that you do well for yourself and the society that you’re responsible for, you don’t do right by them? Is that righteous?
“I’m asking. No, I’m asking. I’m standing for righteousness, for that which is right. I’ve always stood for righteousness.”
Best, the former director of SSA was arrested on May 16 2024 while 27 other SSA operatives were dismissed between March and May 2024 on the basis of the contents of a confidential Special Branch.According to a media release on May 18 2024, then national security minister Fitzgerald Hinds revealed a Cabinet decision that advised the acting President to terminate the appointment of Major (Ret’d), Roger Best as director of the SSA with immediate effect.
His termination was followed by accusations of overseeing unauthorized operations within the SSA, including the establishment of an unapproved Tactical Response Unit and the hiring of personnel linked to a religious group.
Best was detained again January 29 of this year in connection with the importation of two sniper rifles, which authorities claimed he was not authorised to purchase.
Also at the UNC meeting were deputy commissioner of police Deodat Dulalchan and retired police officers Johnny Abraham and UNC’s prospective candidate for Tunapuna Roger Alexander.
