NOISE Variation Requests for the use of fireworks will no longer be accepted by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA).
On Sunday, in a statement on social media, the EMA said, “The public is hereby advised that effective immediately, the EMA will not be accepting Noise Variation Applications for the use of fireworks.”
The EMA stated that approvals required do not fall within the remit of the EMA, which is governed by the Environmental Management Act.
The main legislation governing fireworks in Trinidad and Tobago are the Explosives Act, the Summary Offences Act and the Fireworks Permit Regulations.
However, the EMA is also reminding the public of the damaging impacts of traditional fireworks on human health and animals.
The EMA stated in its Position Paper on the Management of Fireworks in Trinidad and Tobago that a ban on traditional noise-producing fireworks was recommended.
“The use noise reducing fireworks is an acceptable alternative,” the EMA stated.
