WITH a surge of positive Covid-19 cases again, there may be another hold on elective services in the public healthcare system as resources will be needed to treat with the increasing number of sick and critical Covid-19 patients at hospitals.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram is hoping that the Ministry of Health will not have to resort to that measure.

Speaking at the ministry’s Covid-19 update on Saturday, he said, “What we had done earlier in the year, we had a decrease in the accessibility of elective services and we are trying our utmost best to not be there again. But if resources come from a pooled system, it needs to come from somewhere. Elective services, when we upscale in terms of emergency, the next thing that goes down to get additional doctors and nurses is elective surgery for example an elective outpatient clinic.”

Earlier this year, outpatient clinics had closed temporarily and elective surgeries postponed as resources were being used to treat Covid-19 patients.

Dr Pasrasram stressed the need to follow basic health protocols especially the correct wearing of the mask,  washing or sanitising of hands regularly and social distancing.

“Vaccination will only get us this far in the middle of a surge because it takes some time for a person to be fully vaccinated,” he said.

Since September, there has been an increase in hospital occupancy and at present there are over 500 patients in hospital after contracting Covid-19.

The CMO added that increased capacity has been taking place at the most critical ward levels as well as the medical levels.

He referred to the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) who recently activated an Emergency Operating Centre especially for communication.

“Persons communicate on a much more frequent basis so that communication has been stepped up. It allows for a mobilisation of resources across different paths of the regional health authority,” he said.
