THE United National Congress (UNC) has written to Chief Elections Officer Fern Narcis-Scope asking her to respond by 4 pm today (Tuesday) to what it terms “significant irregularities in the Arima Northeast recount.”
The release stated that the UNC was awaiting legal advice on whether to file an election petition.
It stated, “The UNC will not hesitate to do all within its power to fight for free, fair and transparent
elections in Trinidad and Tobago. We will not allow any corruption, political bias and political
agendas to destroy our democracy.”
After the Local Government Elections polls closed on August 14, the Arima Northeast seat was declared a tie with candidates Jairzinho Domingo Gustav Rigsby, of the UNC, and Kim Magdalene Garcia, of the People’s National Movement (PNM) each with 623 votes.
Then after a recount, Rigby was declared the winner by the EBC with one additional vote, taking his tally to 624.
But in a release last week, theĀ EBC stated that the PNM candidate Kim Magdalene Garcia received two additional votes and was declared the winner of the seat with 625.
