WITH long lines anticipated for Monday’s rush of take-away food service, restauranteurs and food vendors were happy to be back to work.
No exception was the doubles vendor as the population rushed for doubles wherever it was available.
AZPNews.com met up with one who sells the popular street food in Claxton Bay.
Bissoondath Sookdeo, popularly known as “Chinky,” sells doubles from his vehicle. He has been selling from for the past 33 years in Claxton Bay and environs.
The pandemic hit him hard.
“The pandemic has affected me greatly. You are only taking out and not putting back. It will take me a while to catch back up myself,” he said.
He was excited about the re-opening and begun preparing even before the announcement was made last Saturday by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley that take-away service would once again be available to the public.
“For the past few weeks, I tried to fix up everything, the kitchen and everything else,” Sookdeo said.
He bought a new doubles box and his vehicle also changed.
He was out early on Monday and his described his first days sales as “ real good.”
Sookdeo said, “ My phone is very busy, people only calling me study for doubles.”
