AFTER gunmen shot and robbed a Debe doubles vendor, Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal is once again calling for more stringent penalties for home invasions.

Just before 5 am on Thursday, Deosaran Ramjewan, 37, went into his Mazda pickup with his two children ages, five and two, just outside his house at of Ramai Trace, Debe, when gunmen opened fire.

His wife gave them the $18,000 in cash from their sales and her jewellery when the gunmen grabbed one of the children.

Meanwhile, Dr Moonilal in a release on Thursday, said, “Poor and struggling people continue to be savaged by merciless criminals while the authorities are increasingly incompetent and distant from the deepening crisis.

“February 1, 2024 was another day of blood and tears as a young couple from Debe,  eking out a living, struggling to pay bills and put food on the table faced a harrowing and brutal home invasion at pre dawn.

“They were working early hours of the morning, while others are sleeping, they were preparing to sell doubles to early morning customers. They were robbed, beaten and shot. The young male victim is struggling for his life.”

He said this situation was typical of the ceaseless spree of bloody crimes under the hopeless and pathetic Rowley administration.

Dr Moonilal said, “I again call for the passage of laws to identify ‘home invasion’ as a new specific offense with a heavy jail term.

“The TTPS can do much better but not under the political directorate of Rowley and Hinds.

“And not with a very suspect Police Service Commision (PSC) that nominated and recommended the current leadership of the TTPS.

“The qualifications and experience of members of the PSC must be questioned at this time. And citizens must ask whether the PSC is politically compromised to offer specific candidates for leadership roles in the TTPS.”
