IN a recent statement, Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar said, “I won’t let a few criminals terrorise, traumatise T&T.”

This is a powerful reminder of the type of leadership Trinidad and Tobago has now. A strong, courageous and unafraid prime minister. Our prime minister has once again demonstrated that she is not here to manage problems; she is here to solve them.

In a climate where criminal elements have tried to hold this nation hostage through fear, intimidation, and violence, the PM’s decisive move to implement a State of Emergency and relocate dangerous prisoners to military-controlled facilities is both timely and commendable. These aren’t half-measures. These are bold, constitutionally sound decisions that send a message loud and clear, the safety and well-being of law-abiding citizens will always take precedence.

This action is rooted in sound intelligence, national security advice, and, most importantly, the political will to act when others might hesitate. The PM has shown that her Government is not only reactive but proactive in addressing threats before they spiral out of control. She made it clear: she will not stand by idly while kidnappers, extortionists, and gang members disrupt the lives of ordinary citizens. That is the mark of true leadership.

And let us not forget, this is not the first time Kamla Persad-Bissessar has risen to the occasion. The Prime Minister has consistently proven that she possesses the grit, wisdom, and moral compass to lead in difficult times.

Moreover, her ability to act while preserving democratic checks, maintaining constitutional timelines, and inviting Parliamentary review shows a deep respect for the rule of law. She is not ruling by decree, but by democratic principle, guided by the urgent needs of the nation.

I for one, stand resolutely behind her leadership. Her Government has brought a sense of assurance to a population desperate for safety, justice, and a return to normalcy. Kamla Persad-Bissessar is not only the right leader for this moment, she is the right leader for the future of Trinidad and Tobago. She walks the walk, and the country is better for it.
