Commentary: Check Yourself

Spread the love

AS I was scrolling through Facebook on July 25, I saw Lisa Wickham’s post that said: “I’ve said goodbye to 25 people in my circle of family and friends since December 26, 2023. An average of three people per month.

“I just want to love everyone and create joy, live peacefully and lovingly. Always my mission, I intend to pursue it even more vigorously… so let’s check in on each other, embrace kindness, smile more, be more tolerant and gentle and most of all forgive.”

Her post inspired today’s article.

If only we would finally learn to do that, what a world it will be! I am speaking from the perspective of learning to check on our associates, friends and family, and once we do that, we can understand what they are going through. We must also learn to sincerely forgive. When last have we checked on our friends and persons we care much about?

Because the time we are living in now, all of us need that support and a base strongly rooted with love.

Once the intention involves love and friendship, you are being that friend and giving your attention to someone in need. Is that not a world all of us should strive to achieve and have?

When it comes to life in general can we say, we are our brother’s keeper? If you’re not, why not, because our heart is speaking out loud. A person with any thinking power can discern the difference between the two. A point all of us need to consider is that death is at our door at some time in our life, and we don’t know when it will be.

If we sincerely cannot forgive and move forward with some form of kinship or friendship, then are we being human or inhumane? In all things we do, we must always understand other people’s perspectives as we grow together with maturity and hope under the sun.

We have to be mindful enough to know that one day, we will die. With all the things we do, think and feel about ourselves, they will all be nothing in the end… That the plain and simple truth, and if you are true to yourself, you will heed these words. I don’t mean to upset anyone, but I’m giving you a wake up call that is coming one day: Death.

If we sincerely understand all those ‘Elements of Life’, why not try to live a better life with people, being involved as fellow citizens, and once we live that better life with each other and our Lord, won’t it be a lighter load to carry?

Having hatred in your heart for years, will not hurt the other person but yourself, my friends. Being bitter and hateful will not make you happier in your life, and mind you I use the words ‘your life.’ We as a society always talk ‘bad man’ talk, but has the bad man talk taken us down the road of positivity or has it been counterproductive for us all? We need to do some soul searching and search to find these answers within. By us finding the answers, we can finally comprehend what we did collectively as a society that led us to this point or ‘Tipping Point’ in our nation. By finding these humble answers within, somehow or somewhere we will find hope to change for the betterment of our own country, after all, Trinidad and Tobago is our home still.

Information is key now as we are living in this time, 2024. Have we perfected information when it comes to being brothers and sisters of our nation? We have got it wrong whereby we put money on top of people’s feelings and a hurt society will always do damage cause when they’re hurt, all they know to be the reality is being destructive and causing hurt. Have we hurt our fellow citizens by not being a brother and sister to them? I always hear hurt people, hurt people. Have we hurt each other in general? This is a question all of us need to ask collectively and by us sincerely finding the answers, we will find some relief to save our society from being destructive onto itself.

In conclusion, let us wake up and smell the coffee and by us smelling the coffee as facing the reality, or should I say the hard reality, we will find hope somehow against all the trauma we face… Thank you for reasoning and tracking with me and always remember you are the solution as it starts with you to make any changes in your own reality. So check yourself please, my dear readers.
