THERE has been an increase in active Covid-19 positive cases in Tobago over the last month.
This is according to the Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram at the Ministry of Health’s virtual media conference on Wednesday.
While presenting a graph on the active cases of Covid-19 in Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Parasram said that Tobago had 10.4% of the cases overall in the country.
He said, “A few months ago we would have seen Tobago hovering between 2% and 4%, similar to the Nariva/Mayaro (1.3%) and we have seen over the last month or so an upsurge in cases in Tobago.”
The CMO said the ministry was keeping an eye on Tobago and counties Victoria (28.7%) and Caroni (18.1%).
Dr Parasram said that the county of St George East was “settling a little bit” since the last presentation as it only had 10% of the active positive cases.
Other counties’ percentage of active Covid-19 cases were:
- St Patrick – 9.9%
- St George West – 5.1%
- St George Central – 10.6%
- St David/St Andrew – 6.1%
The CMO said that a large portion of home isolated patients are asymptomatic (49.5%) with 6.8% of patients having recovered and 5.3% transferred to a facility.
He also said that diabetes and hypertension were the leading comorbidities of those affected with Covid-19 and patients from ages 80 plus made up 16.68% of the patient distribution by age.
Dr Parasram encouraged persons 80 and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible as the morbidity and the mortality goes up to nearly 20% in that age group.
