THE Locusts Control Workers of County Victoria are actively engaged in spraying exercises to prevent further infestation of the pests through their management programme.
On Monday, a release from the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries stated, “Locust Control Workers of County Victoria were continuously engaged in year-round control activities inclusive of surveillance and targeted chemical spraying of affected areas.”
The Moruga Grasshopper commonly called the Moruga Locust will normally live its life cycle in the forested areas of Moruga with incursions into the adjacent agricultural and residential areas, as the locust’s life cycle was comprised of eggs, hoppers, fledglings and adults.
The ministry said, “At present, the emergence of hoppers is being monitored and treated in the Moruga Food Crop Project located in La Savanne, Moruga. Active surveillance exercises are also being undertaken in the Piparo and Tableland areas.”
Moreover, last week, a spraying exercise was executed on an egg bed and hopper site located on the western end of La Savanne and comprised some 5.7 acres.
This exercise was conducted by a four-member team of Keith Paul, Simon Ragoo, Kharamchan Ramine and Michael Sookraj, who used mist blowers and manually carried chemicals and other management apparatus, into the forested areas.
