RESIDENTS of Frederick Settlement in Caroni are calling for urgent action on clogged drains.

They said the situation causes water to overflow into their homes anytime it rains.

“We are fed up with the recurring upheaval of their lives when it rains,” residents said as they held a noisy placard demonstration on Wednesday.

The MP for Chaguanas West Dinesh Rambally was given a guided tour by residents of Kay Street, a release from his office stated.

Residents said the problem has been plaguing the area for many years.

Sanjay Singh, of Kay Street, told Rambally he was forced to put his washing machine, refrigerator and furniture on top of concrete bricks.

In addition, the drain was adjacent to his home, mere inches away from his bedroom, which was connected to a bigger watercourse at the back, he said.

Singh said, “The water accumulates and has nowhere to flow. It’s an earthen drain filled with moss and filled with snakes and other vermin. It is dangerous and despite our pleas for help, not one thing is being done.”

Rambally told residents that their concerns would be addressed to the Ministry of Works and Transport so that remedial works could be undertaken to provide some relief.

Rambally said in 2018 when floods ravaged east and central Trinidad the Caroni district was one of the most hard-hit with homes underwater for days.
