THE United States (US) Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) is helping Trinidad and Tobago to deal with international criminals who may be interested in this country.
This was revealed by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley speaking at a press conference hosted at Whitehall on Friday.
He called the press conference to discuss his recent trip to Washington DC where he met with US Vice President Kamala Harris, US Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Melissa Dalton and Director of the CIA William Burns.
At the press conference, he said during the visit he also met with officials of the FBI.
Dr Rowley said, “We do have some problems here in T&T which I will not burden you with today. But we do have some internal problems and given the nature of our relationship with the United States, the resources of the FBI and CIA will be made available to us to deal with our own internal problems.”
He said, “We are now attracting elements of international organised crime which is very concerning to the government of Trinidad and Tobago so we are discussing this with the United States to get as much help as we can in ensuring that our bad situation is not worsened by these developments.”
He said these were internal problems, he didn’t want to burden the nation with.
Dr Rowley said officials of Homeland Security also gave a “listening ear” to what T&T might need. The prime minister said he also met with senior members of the Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy.
But pressed further on to what these problems were, he said, “We are an open country in international trade (and) international contact and even outside of our official entry points what we have been discovering is that certain criminals are liking us and these are not small timers. I say no more on that.”
Asked again about it, he said he would not go into more details as these are matters of national security “which ought better be kept where they are at the moment.”
