Chemist on Bail for Dishonoured Cheques

A 37-year-old chemist is granted bail after allegedly issuing four cheques that were no valid.

Ernesto Johnson, of Couva, was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 with a surety by a Justice of the Peace, after being charged with four counts of obtaining property together valued at $7,780.83.

He was charged with the offences on Wednesday by WPC Gowrie of the Fraud Squad.

The victim reported to police that during the period October 5, 2022 and October 12, 2022, he sold a quantity of self-adhesive stickers together valued at $7,780.83, to a man who is the owner of a Couva business.

He alleged that as a means of payment, the man handed over four cheques of varying values on different dates.

The victim accepted the cheques as a good and valid order for the payment of the stickers, however, they were returned as dishonoured by the bank.

Requests by the victim for the return of his goods proved futile and the man also failed to honour the debt.

Investigations were launched into the matter and the suspect was arrested by Fraud Squad officers on Wednesday.

Johnson is to appear before an Arima Magistrate on October 26.
