IN commemorating Republic Day, the Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association (TTBWA) wants to be an equal partner in nation-building.
In a press release on Tuesday, the TTBWA stated, “Today, blind and visually impaired citizens reaffirm our commitment to contribute to nation-building – not as recipients of charity, but as equal partners in a just and inclusive society.”
The association stated that the blind and visually impaired were calling to be recognised beyond recipients of the disability grant and wanted the opportunity to become contributors to society.
The TTBWA stated, “Blind people are capable, resourceful, and determined. With proper education, workplace accommodations, and assistive technologies-such as screen readers, braille displays, and tactile graphics- we can work, innovate, and lead across professions.”
“We are demanding opportunity, access and equity,” they added.
Highlighting the national watchwords, motto and anthem, the TTBWA called for systemic changes to be made to include those differently abled.
The Association stated, “On this 49th Republic Anniversary, commemorated on Wednesday 24 September 2025, the TTBWA calls upon the government, civil society, and the private sector to partner with us. Provide opportunities, support inclusive systems, and honour our potential.”
“Our tools may differ, but our determination is unwavering. With the right support, blind citizens can raise productive voices, lead with vision, and help shape a Republic that truly belongs to all its people,” they concluded.
