Big With No Sense: T&T Lacks Critical Thinking

AN enormous issue we have in TT is that a large part of our population lacks critical thinking.

They need things put into black and white, point form, and blasting from a loudspeaker. Grasping context, sub-context and metaphorical meanings don’t quite stick.

Therefore it is not a mystery as to why a good chunk of people completely missed the point of the prime minister’s address on Thursday evening.

I am not sure what people expected to hear, because we have reached a point in our fight against Covid where there isn’t much more the Government can do other than lay down some serious laws and mandate vaccinations like some nations are doing.

Thursday evening’s address was a warning. Something many people missed.

The PM highlighted what his Government had done to combat the virus and what other nations are currently doing to curb the spread. If you paid attention you would have realised, we have and have had it relatively easy in regards to mandating vaccines and the freedom of movement.

For those who didn’t quite get this and hit up that comments section with gems such as “is this for people living under a rock” or “get to the point nah,” let me explain the point.

What our prime minister did was essentially fire a warning shot.

Up until now, he has tried to remain as people-pleasing as possible. We all know no politician in T&T wants to upset their dwindling flock of diehards, and add more fuel to their opponents who are like stuck records with their “we are living in a dictatorship” diatribe.

If you used your thinking caps and allowed all of those neurons in your brain to fire, you would have come to the conclusion that what he really said was, “All yuh get yuh damn act together. Otherwise, I will go Kim Jong on yuh backsides. I will mandate vaccines, shutdown all yuh good times down and come to your house beat yuh if necessary. All of you big and have no sense.”

It was a calm, sombre, ominously veiled threat aimed at inspiring the population to take some responsibility and do what they need to do to curb infection.

The reality is at one point or another we will all either get Covid or be exposed to it.

The issue of concern is not the number of cases, but the high level of hospitalisations.

The vaccine isn’t perfect, but the numbers have shown that vaccinated people are significantly less likely to be hospitalised or to die from Covid. It does not make you immune but gives you a fighting chance.

I’ve seen a good amount of shallow thinkers pointing out that since the vaccine was introduced our cases and deaths have increased and to this, I say correlation does not always mean causation.

When vaccines were introduced we began reopening, restrictions were eased, people began congregating again and people got slack with masks wearing. We were given an inch and ran a mile. So, duh, cases would have increased. No one is purposely infecting you or using black magic to usher in the anti-Christ with a vaccine.

With that being said, obviously, cases would go up – vaccinated or unvaccinated.  While I am vaccinated, I still take precautions. I am not fighting to go lime and get drunk in a bar because I know I can still get Covid and spread it to someone who isn’t vaccinated or someone who simply cannot survive the virus.

Just because you are vaccinated does not mean you can go balls-to-wall, zero caution.

Unvaccinated people are literally their own worst enemies at the moment. The majority of deaths and hospitalisations are among the unvaccinated population. In the past two weeks, three people I know have died from Covid. All three were unvaccinated and super proud of it.

We all got slack. I drove past the Port-of-Spain Licensing Office on Tuesday. There were at least 20 people outside, smushed up together, zero social distancing, and quite a few masks below the nose. Big with no sense. I mean seriously can we all just try to use our brains.

PM Rowley fired the warning shot, so unless we get our act together, we can expect mandates, curfews and other harsh measures. All of which we bought upon ourselves.

Carry on T&T, when you cannot get a non-Covid related treatment at the hospital because they are overwhelmed with Covid cases, and the Government makes vaccination mandatory in your place of employment; keep your tears to yourself.
