Bharath: Carnival Lacks Clear Vision

FORMER government minister Vasant Bharath expressed strong concerns regarding the financial management of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival, widely celebrated as “The Greatest Show on Earth.”

Bharath questioned why the iconic event, which should generate substantial revenue, continues to cost taxpayers over $140 million annually.

in a Facebook post on Friday, Bharath highlighted the National Carnival Commission’s (NCC) decision not to increase prize money for competitions this year, despite providing higher subventions to unsponsored steelbands.

He said, “The National Carnival Commission (NCC) has admitted there will be no increase in prize money for competitions this year, yet unsponsored steelbands have received higher subventions.

“While supporting our unsponsored bands is commendable, it highlights the broader issue: Carnival lacks a clear strategy to move beyond dependence on state funds and transition into a sustainable, profitable industry.”

Bharath said that at a time when local businesses are struggling, VAT refunds are delayed, and essential public services are underfunded, it is unacceptable for such a significant national expense to yield minimal economic returns.

He said, “Instead of investing in effective marketing, corporate partnerships, and tourism initiatives that would attract more international visitors and generate revenue, the Government seems content to maintain Carnival as an annual drain on public funds. Where is the vision to transform this world-class event into a profit-generating enterprise that benefits the entire nation?”

He criticised the government’s inefficiency, drawing parallels to other areas of economic mismanagement, including unpaid VAT refunds and failed agricultural policies.

While acknowledging Pan Trinbago’s efforts in seeking private sector support, Bharath stressed that such initiatives should not rest solely on individual organizations. He urged the government to implement policies that promote private investment, international marketing, and financial accountability to ensure Carnival becomes a source of economic empowerment.
