SOVEREIGNITY is not only about history but also about responsibility.
“It calls upon us to safeguard our democracy, to protect our institutions and to preserve our cultural heritage,” says Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles.
Beckles on Saturday reminded citizens of the defining moment for Trinidad and Tobago back in August 31, 1962, when the Union Jack was lowered and with pride, the red, white, and black of Trinidad and Tobago was raised for the very first time.

Now, 63 years later, she is encouraging citizens to ensure that no one diminishes the honour and significant celebrations of that milestone occasion in her Independence Day message.
Beckles said, “We must take immense pride in the vibrant spirit of who we are. Trinidad and Tobago have emerged as a strong independent nation and a proud member of the CARICOM community.”
Recounting the history of Independence Day under Trinidad and Tobago’s first Prime Minister Dr Eric Williams and founder of the People’s National Movement, she lamented again that this year, there will be no grand military parade in  Port of Spain.
Beckles said, “That is why it is essential for us to continue to invest in and improve how we display and recount our stories in our museums, archives, and cultural villages.
“Our children must know the struggles of the enslaved and the indentured, the achievements of our artists, scholars, and athletes and the courage of our leaders who fought for freedom.
“Without history, there is no identity, without identity, there can be no national pride.”

Referring to the national anthem, Beckles said, it calls upon citizens to find an equal place for every creed and race.
“That promise must never remain a mere aspiration. It must always be a reality. Our people, regardless of background or circumstance, must feel that they belong, that they matter, and that their voices are heard,” she said.
Beckles also said  this anniversary was a call to  look honestly at the state of the nation today.
“We must acknowledge the challenges we face, such as rising crime, economic uncertainty, mass firing, political victimization, inequities in education, healthcare, and housing, and the attacks on independent institutions.

“But let us also recognise the strength within us to overcome these struggles. Independence reminds us that our people have always endured adversity and triumphed. The same resilience that carried us through slavery, indentureship, colonialism, and the uncertainty of nationhood will carry us through the trials of today.”
She encouraged citizens to reclaim the spirit of unity and service and resolve to heal divisions in society.
“Let us resolve to serve one another in compassion and fairness. Let us resolve to restore hope, hope that Trinidad and Tobago will fulfil its destiny as a nation of peace, equality, creativity, and opportunity,” Beckles encouraged.
