AZP News Exclusive: Alexander Name Left Out of Nomination Receipt

THE name of the United National Congress (UNC) Tunapuna general elections candidate, former policeman Roger Alexander, was not on his nomination receipt after he left the office of the Returning Officer at the Upper El Dorado Community Centre at College Road in Tunapuna on Friday.

Leisel Joel-George, Communications Officer of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC), told AZP News that this will not affect Alexander’s candidacy for the April 28 general elections.

Sources told AZP News that Alexander’s Elections Officer Sushilla Mark went back to the Returning Officer for Tunapuna Edmund Alexander and had the name of the UNC candidate placed on the receipt for the $5,000 deposit and nomination papers.

Alexander was one of four candidates contesting the seat. He was the first to arrive with a music truck, tassa and supporters just like incumbent MP Esmond Forde.

As Alexander emerged from the office, he held up the receipt.

Others who filed nomination papers were Aleksei Henry of the Patriotic Front; Savita Pierre of the National Transformation Alliance; and Leshawn Gopee of The Humanitarian Campaign.

Henry showed AZP News his receipt, which had his name on it.

Speaking to the media, Alexander praised the political leader of the UNC. Asked if he was told he would get the post of national security if the UNC wins the general elections, Alexander said, “My leader has spoken to meā€¦ you know back in the day when I was a police I used to say ā€˜and she told me something,ā€™ well she told me something.”

He said, “We will work together as a team to ensure the safety and security of this nation, whatever my input will be.”

Forde said the PNM has been fighting crime with an initiative with CCTV cameras that started in his constituency that will soon go national.

He criticised Alexander for not being from Tunapuna.
