WHILE the main focus has been on two major slates for the United National Congress (UNC) internal election, one person is asking the party’s membership for a chance to serve independently.

Describing himself as an entrepreneur patriot, lifetime member Robert Amar is vying for the post of Deputy Political Leader of which there are three positions available.

Speaking with AZP News on Friday, Amar said, “There are two other positions available for any other person if people give me a chance. They will have a discerning voice still present.”

He said he did not need to campaign as part of any slate as his history and name will speak for itself.

Hailing from Woodbrook, Amar has served in the Senate on two occasions under UNC former leader Basdeo Panday as well as present leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

He said, “The Amar name is synonymous with high quality, integrity, honesty…”

The reason he did not join any slate was because he believes that slates divide.

“Slates is the reason why internal elections has become dirty,” Amar said mentioning all internal elections in all political parties faced that same problem.

He continued, “Slates build animosity and what you want is togetherness in a party. You need the best people. You don’t need the best people from a slate.”

Amar also said he was not approached by neither the STAR team nor the United Patriots  by anyone to join their slate.

“I am just a fly in the ointment,” he said about himself.

Amar’s sign is the peace sign.

“I am the peacemaker. If  you are looking to vote for me. Just look for the white spot on the ballot paper. I don’t really have any symbol.”

The UNC internal election takes place on Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm.
