PROCESSES in the public service that were slowed down by bureaucracy and lack of digitalisation may become a thing of the past under the newly minted Ministry of Public Administration and Artificial Intelligence.
Speaking with AZP news on Tuesday after delivering his feature address at the 2nd Caribbean Spectrum Management Conference at the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain, Minister of Public Administration and Artificial Intelligence Dominic Smith said the mission of his ministry was utilise technology and applications of artificial intelligence to enhance systems in the public service and benefit the population.
Smith said, “At the end of the day there are a suite of products and services the public sector provides to the forward-facing consumer, and it is our hope that this will make this as efficient and as easy as possible for consumers to digest and to engage in.”

He said, “In the past we have had challenges where things seem to either, as a result of bureaucracy or just the need for digital transformation, things have slowed, and progress has been delayed. It is our hope that using artificial intelligence and essentially all available technology we can now transition Trinidad and Tobago as the lighthouse for tech use. The public service being one of the largest recipients of that. We will work with the population and citizens and it’s important all the services we provide benefit them.”
Asked what he hoped to achieve during his term in office, Smith said, “The accomplishment at the end of the day would be how the lives of the citizenry have been improved over time and technology is an enabler of that and so at the end of the day once we are working with the population and listening more importantly to what their pinpoints are and as a Ministry we are delivering on those points to make their lives better.”
