AG’s Deputy Permanent Secretary O’Brien Dies

SEAN O’BRIEN, a public servant with almost three decades of service, passes away.

On Wednesday, the Office of the Attorney General Office and Ministry of Legal Affairs (AGLA), where O’Brien was last attached as the acting Deputy Permanent Secretary, announced his passing in a release.

O’Brien joined the AGLA in 2020 and though his tenure was short he left an indelible mark, the release stated.

It stated that the level of dedication shown to his role and projects on which he served remained above par irrespective of any circumstance.

It stated, “O’Brien’s unique sense of humour and perspective added to his warm personality, which created a cohesive work environment in which colleagues and staff alike were always treated with utmost respect and fairness.”

O’Brien’s tenure in the Public Sector began in the Ministry of Education.

The release stated, “In 1996, he was appointed to the Central Statistical Office (CSO) where he worked for the majority of his professional life.

“At the CSO, his experience was wide and varied as evidenced by the fact that he held a multitude of positions.

“He served as one of the country’s leading statisticians in the Agriculture, National Accounts, Population Social and Vital Statistics, Economic Statistics and Continuous Sample Survey of Population divisions, as well as the Assistant Director and Director.”

In addition, O’Brien held the position of Director, Court Research and Statistics at the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago from 2013 to 2015.

He was also a member of the United Nations Inter-Agency and Expert Group on the Sustainable Development Goals (IAED-SDGs).

AGLA stated, “The Public Sector is left with a void that cannot be measured because of his distinctive involvement and qualifications in the economic and business management fields.”

The Attorney General, Faris Al Rawi, Minister in the AGLA Renuka Sagramsingh-Sooklal,  acting Permanent Secretary Natasha Barrow all expressed condolences to O’Brien’s family and loved ones.
