WATER quality changes at the Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (DESALCOTT) facility are resulting in a temporary reduction in the amount of water supplied to the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA).
In a press release on Wednesday, WASA advised of a temporary water supply reduction to communities served by the DESALCOTT facility, citing changes in the quality of source water entering the plant.
According to WASA, DESALCOTT advised the Authority in late February that it had observed an above-normal presence of organic material in its seawater intake. Consequently, the plant had to adjust its processes to protect the integrity of its equipment and ensure the quality of the drinking water produced.
WASA emphasized that there is no risk to public health, as the water quality remains uncompromised and continues to meet the highest safety standards.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the factors influencing the raw water supply. Sampling is being conducted in surrounding areas, including the Couva River outlet.
Areas affected by the reduction in water supply include: Caroni, Warrenville, Cunupia, Chaguanas, Caparo, Chase Village, Couva, Point Lisas, California, Claxton Bay, Plaisance Park, Pointe-Ã -Pierre, City of San Fernando, Vistabella, Gasparillo, Marabella, South West Union Hall, Pleasantville, Palmiste, Phillipine, Duncan Village, Esperance, Gulf View, Bel Air, La Romain, South Oropouche, Otaheite, Rousillac, Aripero, parts of La Brea, Avocat, Fyzabad, parts of Siparia (including De Gannes Village and Quarry Village), San Francique, Debe, Syne Village, Lowkie Trace, Sunrees Road, and Mora Dam Road.
WASA is urging customers to use water wisely and to store an adequate supply. The Authority stated it is committed to working with DESALCOTT to return operations to normalcy in the shortest time possible.
