A failing Grade for Crime

‘Citizens are the ones being gunned down and drenched in a sea of blood with no hope for protection or justice, our cries fall on deaf ears and we live in self-imposed prisons.’

IT was only the second day of the New Year 2022 and already a double murder was reported on Sunday night.

Preliminary reports stated that two armed assailants came out of the vehicle, entered the yard and attempted to open the door of the home in Sampson Street Extension, Cunupia.

Pretending to be police and in a split second, the two assailants shot the two residents of the home and fled. Both were killed during this engagement and it’s not the first time that this has happened to our citizens nor will it be the last.

The year 2021 ended with 448 with the bloodiest month of November recording 77 murders. These results again should reflect on the Minister of National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds performance and what blame he should shoulder for the mess the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) leadership is in at the moment.

For all citizens this should be of grave concern, one would hope that the minister’s performance should be better, but given his track record, I must say I don’t have much confidence in his ability to perform in this post or to review his own performance in introspection.

The crime epidemic is out of control and what we see from the Honorable Minister is him pointing fingers at others, blaming everyone and everything around him instead of facing the problem, assessing the situation and looking for legitimate ways of tackling the shortcomings of the TTPS.Hadco

Citizens are the ones being gunned down and drenched in a sea of blood with no hope for protection or justice, our cries fall on deaf ears and we live in self-imposed prisons.

So, in the midst of the horrendous statistics on the murder rate in T&T please put forward your plans, your crime prevention strategies, basically what you will do to prevent such an occurrence again and to deal the spiralling crime epidemic.

The minister continues to hide behind the bureaucracy and rely on his posturing instead of facts and current information when assessing the situation on the ground. The media houses continue to accept his deflections and excuses while sensationalising statements of his own and the detractors causes more distress and confusion amongst our citizens. How disappointing!

In fact, with respect to all crimes, the nation is repeatedly told that “police will comment further”, “investigations are continuing” and other similar statements that never materialise. The breakthrough never comes. The police move onto another case, and another case and so on as the cycle continues. The population and our families are the real sufferers that endure the dreadful life-long pain, knowing that hardcore criminals, gunmen and kidnappers, including murders, are casually walking the streets throughout the country unabated. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths that politicians are often willing to go to get into or stay in government.

Dear Mr Minister, your record speaks for itself where your grade is F, under you we have had the deadliest month of murders in our nation’s history in November 2021. Your diligent and unceasing effort to make Trinidad and Tobago safe again is failing miserably and you continue to play games with people’s lives.

Our citizens of dead relatives call out to you for justice. Your time in office shows we are once again under the worst siege from criminals and within a depressed economy –  the rising food prices, the rise in the price of flour – and within the third and deadliest wave of Covid-19 pandemic we feel that you are out of your depth.

We humbly ask that you stepdown and allow someone better suited for the job to take the reins and ensure we get control of the crime epidemic, because like your cohort the Minister of Health, the Honorable Terrance Deyalsingh you seem to be fighting him for the post of the worst-performing Ministry in T&T.
