THE Cabinet has agreed to accept US$700,000 in funding from the United States Embassy for Trinidad and Tobago’s Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement.
This was revealed in a release by the National Security Ministry on Thursday.
It stated that the initiative is a continuation of the established framework governing the implementation of security assistance programmes under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI).
Through the CBSI, the US and other CBSI States have agreed to undertake cooperative efforts to reduce illicit trafficking, advance public safety and security, and further promote social justice.
Assistance is provided in the areas of: Strengthening Counter-narcotic Control Capabilities; Money Laundering/Financial Crimes; Drug Demand Reduction; Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption; Law Enforcement Professionalisation and Support Programme.
Additionally, the US donated two full body security scanners to TT’s Government to strengthen security efforts at the Piarco International Airport.
On Wednesday, Minister Stuart Young thanked the embassy for their continued support in collaborative national security initiatives and reiterated his commitment to working together with the US to ensure the safety and security of TT and the wider region.
