FUAD Abu Bakr is not to be screened by the People’s National Movement (PNM) for a seat in the next general elections.
The PNM issued a release after reports surfaced that Bakr was to appear before the screening committee on Thursday.
The release stated: “The People’s National Movement has received no nomination for Mr Fuad Abu Bakr and advises that he is not scheduled to be screened by the PNM’s screening committee.”
It stated that the PNM as a party was built upon a solid structure and adhere to prescribed process.
The release added, “The process for a person to become a nominee involves a call for nomination from the party for nominees for the General Election (in this instance), with a deadline for the close of submission of nominations.
“Interested party members must receive a nomination from a bona fide party group of from the Youth League within the respective constituency.
“The constituency executive will then forward the names of all persons who received nominations to the party secretariat.
“Only persons who receive nominations will then be scheduled to appear before the screening committee.”
Abu Bakr is the political leader of the New National Vision (NNV) which was formed in 2010 and garnered about 3,000 votes in the last general elections when it contested 12 seats.
Some media outlets had reported on Thursday that Abu Bakr, whose father Yasin Abu Bakr led an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the Trinidad and Tobago government in 1990, was to be screened for the Port-of-Spain South seat for the PNM.
He was quoted in the online Express saying that he was to be screened for the PNM stronghold.
General elections are due this year.
