Alexander Speaks Security with UN

THE security of Trinidad and Tobago was a main topic of discussion between Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander and the United Nations this week.
Alexander hosted senior representatives from the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office (UN RCO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for a high-level meeting at the ministry’s headquarters, Abercromby Street, Port of Spain on Wednesday.

In a release on Thursday, the ministry stated, “The talks centred on advancing Trinidad and Tobago’s security priorities through stronger international partnerships, with a particular focus on reducing crime, strengthening national resilience and aligning development initiatives with the Government’s national security agenda.
Alexander noted that security was a shared responsibility that requires innovation, collaboration, and global cooperation.
He said the Ministry of Homeland Security was building powerful partnerships with international organisations such as the UNDP to confront evolving threats, dismantle criminal networks, and create safer communities.

“The government remains steadfast in its mission to protect our people and our nation, and through strategic cooperation we are ensuring that our policies are not only effective, but also people-centred and development-oriented,” the minister said.
The UN delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Trinidad and Tobago in tackling crime and advancing sustainable development, highlighting the importance of partnership and innovation in strengthening community safety and resilience.

The ministry stated it continues to champion international collaboration as a critical tool in reducing crime, enhancing security, and safeguarding the well-being of all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.

• Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Homeland Security Videsh Maharaj;
• Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence Narine Charran;
• UN Resident Coordinator Joanna Kazana;
• UNDP Resident Representative to Trinidad and Tobago Ugo Blanco; and
• Senior officials from the Ministry of Homeland Security and the United Nations Office
