POLICE Commissioner Allister Guevarro has warned criminals that “a life of crime is now a high-risk vocation” in Trinidad and Tobago, following the fatal shooting of two bandits by a licensed firearm holder.
And he has advised offenders to surrender their weapons and change course.
“Put down your weapons. Turn your life around, call the nearest police station and tell us where to get those guns. It will be better for you if you have not received the message before or, as the old people would say, if stick break in yuh ears let meh repeat it again—a life of crime is now a high-risk vocation in this country, so hand in your guns and become productive members of society,” the top cop said.
His warning came in a voice note on the heels of two bandits being killed by a licensed firearm holder in Santa Cruz last Friday.
“To those individuals who continue to pursue a life of crime, let this serve as a reminder—Trinidad and Tobago is no longer a safe haven for criminal enterprise. The risks are high, the consequences are grave,” the Police Commissioner stressed, adding that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) will not relent in its mission to dismantle criminal networks and restore public safety.
According to police, a 66-year-old licensed firearm user was attacked by bandits attempting to steal his vehicle. He fired on them, killing one man and his aunt, who was driving the getaway car. A third suspect fled the scene. The licensed firearm holder has since been questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Guevarro said the incident underscored “a deeper issue plaguing our society” and called on citizens to be cautious in their online commentary. He warned that “premature speculation” and the circulation of unverified information could jeopardise the integrity of the investigation and hinder justice.
“The TTPS remains committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens, including those who are licensed to carry firearms. Every incident involving the use of lethal force is treated with the utmost seriousness and will be investigated with full transparency,” the police chief assured. (CMC)
