NINE men with ages ranging from 22 to 29, were arrested by police officers during a targeted anti-crime operation in the San Fernando district.
They were arrested on Thursday and police also seized multiple illegal firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen property.
The operation, which took place between 2 pm and 6 pm, was led by Senior Superintendent Simon, Superintendent Jaikaran, ASP Ramsaran, and Inspector Maharaj and was supervised by Sergeant Nandlal, acting Sgt Seecharan, and acting Cpl Huggins.
Officers from the San Fernando Enquiry Staff and the Southern Division Task Force were also involved.
The exercise focused on high-crime areas, targeting priority offenders, frequently stolen vehicles, and gathering critical intelligence in relation to an ongoing robbery/murder investigation, a release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) revealed on Friday.
During the operation three vehicles were intercepted and searched based on intelligence and surveillance and the following items seized:
- One black pistol with an extended magazine and ten rounds of 9mm ammunition
- One shotgun and three 12-gauge cartridges
- One extended magazine with fifteen rounds of 9mm ammunition
- One black bulletproof vest with the word “POLICE” printed on the front
A quantity of jewellery, including: one gold-coloured chain, one gold-coloured hand band, three gold-coloured rings, two silver bracelets and one silver hand band.
Of the nine persons arrested, three were from Oropune Gardens, Piarco, one from St James, another from Beetham Gardens, one man from Port of Spain, one-Morvant, one-Aripero and a 29-year-old man from La Romain.
In a subsequent release, the TTPS reported that a 24-year-old suspect from Las Lomas was arrested in Tunapuna on Friday.
Police reported that a search of his vehicle resulted in the seizure of one firearm and a magazine containing seven rounds of 9mm ammunition.
