Homemade Shotguns Seized by Police

TWO homemade shotguns, a cache of ammunition, camouflage clothing and other contraband have been seized in two separate incidents in Northern and Southern Trinidad.

In a media release on Sunday, the TTPS stated on July 26, between the hours of 6 pm and 10 pm, members of the Special Response Unit (SRU) and the Port of Spain and Western Division Emergency Response Patrol (ERP) conducted an intelligence-led operation in the Gonzales district.

According to the release, officers searched a premises on Davis Street, Gonzales where the following items were seized:

  • One homemade shotgun
  • One 12-gauge cartridge
  • One extended .40 calibre magazine
  • Eight .40 calibre rounds
  • One 9mm magazine
  • Fifteen 5.56 rounds of ammunition
  • One pair of camouflage pants
  • One black utility vest

Investigations are ongoing into the discovery.

The TTPS stated the operation was spearheaded by ACP Hazel, coordinated by Superintendent Robain, ASP Ward, and Inspector Saunders, and supervised by acting Sgt Antoine and Corporal Ghingooree.

Meanwhile, a confrontation between two neighbours in the Southern Division led to seizure of a homemade shotgun.

The TTPS reported, “An unemployed man from Naparima-Mayaro Road, New Grant, was picking mangoes at the back of his home when he encountered a man known to him. The man reportedly issued threats before leaving the area, only to return moments later armed with a firearm. A struggle ensued between the two men, during which the victim was able to disarm the suspect. The suspect then fled the scene. The victim subsequently contacted the police, who responded promptly and took possession of the homemade shotgun.”

Investigations are ongoing into the incident.
