Man on Bail for Election Day Bribery

A 46-year-old man has been granted bail after he allegedly tried to bribe people to vote for a particular party on election day.
The suspect from Mt D’or Road, Champs Fleurs, was granted bail after being charged with election bribery last Friday.
He appeared before Master Gray on Monday and was released on his own recognizance, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) stated via media release on Tuesday.

He is expected to return to court on June 5.
Police arrested the individual on April 28 and he was formally charged last Friday.
The TTPS stated that they received information around 9.40 am on the day of the arrest and intercepted a vehicle on Mt D’or Road.

The suspect was reportedly seen offering and paying individuals between $300 and $400 to vote for a particular political party.
Police said the suspect admitted he was paid $800 to drive people and claimed the money he had was from a sou-sou.
Officers said he produced $30,000 in cash and was arrested on suspicion of bribery.

 A cash seizure operation, supported by the Financial Investigations Branch, was carried out on April 30. The $30,000 was seized.
The investigation was led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin and included Assistant Commissioner of Police Richard Smith and Rishi Singh, Senior Superintendent Michael Pierre, Inspector Pierre, Legal Officer Sergeant Andre George, and Sergeant Newton.
