MINISTER of Finance Davendranath Tancoo said it is logical that citizens who have already paid property tax will likely be refunded if the law is repealed.

He made the statement while speaking to reporters at the President’s House on Saturday following the swearing-in ceremony of the new Cabinet.

Asked what will happen to those who paid the tax after Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced the plan to repeal the Revenue Authority Act,  Tancoo said, “I think it would be inappropriate for persons who have already paid to be penalised. They have done their duty according to the law.”

In his first interview as Minister of Finance, Tancoo said, “It is logical to assume that persons who abided by the law and made their payments, should not be penalised for doing so. It is very likely that they will be compensated for that.”

He said more details will be provided as time goes on.

In response to questions about stepping into the role of former minister of finance Colm Imbert, Tancoo said, “I hope to God I am not filling in his shoes.”

He added that he hopes to bring a different level of transparency, accountability and public awareness of the funds of Trinidad and Tobago, how its money is spent and how money is received.

He said, “I want to do much better than Colm Imbert did and I do not think that is very difficult.”
