WITH just about four days to go before the general election on April 28, the public is being reminded of offences on that day.
The reminder comes from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) in a public notice on Wednesday.
Paid political ad
The offences are outlined in the Representation of the People Act Chapter 2:01.
They include:
· Tampering with ballot boxes
· Prohibition of employment of bands of music
· Loudspeakers, banners, favours, badges etc are prohibited
· Persons not to congregate near polling stations
· Influencing elector to vote for any candidate
· Intoxicating liquor not to be sold
· Illegal voting
· Undue influence
· Personation
The TTPS also reminds the public of the penalties.
For the penalty for corrupt practice, a person who commits the offence of personation or of aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring the commission of the offence of personation is liable on conviction on indictment to a fine of $30,000 and to imprisonment for five years.
For the penalty for illegal practice, except as otherwise specifically provided, a person guilty of an illegal practice is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $15,000 or to imprisonment for six months.
The TTPS stated that it will ensure safety, security and order are maintained during all election activities over the pre- election period and on Polling Day.
