San Fernando’s Carnival Monday celebrations turned sombre after 74-year-old Selwyn Little was killed in after being crushed by a music truck on Cipero Street.

The incident occurred around 4.10 pm as Little, a pensioner and longtime Carnival participant, held a banner for the Jammerz International sailor band in front of the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck’s brakes failed while descending an incline, causing it to roll over Little, who died instantly.

Police cordoned off Cipero Street, disrupting Carnival bands and stakeholders en route to the Southern Academy for Performing Arts judging point.

Bands like Fireworks Carnival were redirected to alternative routes, including Prince of Wales Street, to bypass the scene.

San Fernando Mayor Robert Parris said, This is a tragic way to lose your life—nothing we expected today,”

He said, “We must continue Carnival, but no one prepares for a tragedy like this.”

Little resided in Mon Repos. Investigations into the brake failure are ongoing.
