OPPOSITION Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is being called upon to retract her statements relating to former US President Joe Biden and his Government.
The call comes from the People’s National Movement (PNM) National Women’s League on Tuesday.
In a release, the Women’s League condemned Persad-Bissessar’s comments made in a congratulatory note to recently inaugurated US President Donald Trump.
While the release stated Persad-Bissessar who is aspiring to be Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago should operate differently, the Women’s League was not surprised by her statements.
The PNM’s release stated Persad-Bissessar “denigrated the previous democratic government of the United States of America.”
“This kind of rhetoric is reckless and damaging, not only to our relationship with a key ally like the US, but also to Trinidad and Tobago’s standing on the world stage,” the Women’s League said.
“The release stated that the remarks from Mrs Persad-Bissessar risk undermining a strong partnership and harming international reputation encouraging division.”
The Women’s League said it was especially concerned about the negative influence the remarks may have on young people who look to political leaders for guidance on how to engage with the world.
“By publicly attacking a government that has been a consistent partner in the progress of the Caribbean, Mrs Persad-Bissessar risks isolating Trinidad and Tobago and harming our prospects for future cooperation,” the release stated.
The Women’s League continued, “We remind Mrs Persad-Bissessar and the Opposition that constructive engagement, both within our borders and internationally, is crucial for the well-being of our people. The actions of political leaders have far-reaching consequences, and it is imperative that they uphold the dignity of the office and the trust placed in them by the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.”
