THE 2024 Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) is set to feature three double-headers at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad.
This year’s tournament will see defending champions Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors, and Trinbago Knight Riders competing in matches after T20 games between the West Indies and South Africa men’s cricket teams.
The men’s T20 matches will precede the women’s games, a strategic move aimed at boosting attendance, according to newly-appointed WCPL regional head of marketing, Candace Simmons. Speaking at the WCPL 2024 launch at the Massy head office in Port of Spain on Wednesday, Simmons highlighted the growing interest and stature of the event.
“As we enter the third year of this fantastic event, we continue to see the interest and stature grow,” Simmons said.
She said, “This year we welcome the best cricketing talent from across the region and from around the world to take part in the WCPL. And from a cricketing standpoint, this is the strongest tournament to date.”
All WCPL 2024 games will be held from August 21 to 29 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. The highly anticipated double-header days are scheduled for August 23, 25, and 27.
Simmons noted the importance of fan support in making the WCPL special and expressed confidence in strong local turnout.
“… we are sure that we will have excellent support this year from the Trinidad public this time,” she said.
Simmons said, “The WCPL and women’s cricket remains a key focus for us going forward and we are looking forward to staging another excellent event in 2024 and using that as a springboard for further success in the future.”
Senior Vice President of the Massy Group, Ambikah Mongroo, reiterated Massy’s commitment to sponsoring the WCPL through 2026, highlighting the tournament’s growth in investment and coverage. Mongroo shared Massy’s “deep desire” to see the WCPL achieve parity with the men’s competition.
Barbados Royals cricketer Aaliyah Alleyne expressed her excitement about the upcoming tournament.
“It is a tournament in which we can also put our hands up and showcase what we have to give to the world and also showcase our ability and put our hands up for selection,” Alleyne said.
