Port of Spain – The Ministry of Health states that there are 450 laboratory-confirmed cases of Dengue fever, with four confirmed deaths attributed to the illness.
The Ministry stated that the importance of recognising the signs and symptoms of Dengue fever, which may include fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pains, skin rash, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
Dengue fever is primarily spread through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, and symptoms typically manifest within five to six days of being bitten, lasting for one to two weeks. Individuals experiencing any of these symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention from their doctor or the nearest health facility.
In an effort to combat the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, the Ministry of Health has provided the following source reduction tips to the public:
- Dispose of all unwanted items that can collect water and serve as mosquito breeding sites;
- Cover water containers with mosquito-proof coverings to prevent mosquitoes from breeding;
- Clear away bush and undergrowth that can provide shelter for mosquitoes;
- Maintain clean drains and guttering to ensure proper water flow; and
- Use mosquito nets and insect repellent as personal protection measures when necessary.
