AFTER 15 murders over the weekend Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is once again stating that the issuing of legal firearms is a means to fighting crime.
In a release on Sunday, she said, “To our citizens, I urge you all to hold strong, and keep the faith: soon a new UNC government will give you the legal firearms and legislation to level the field and fight back against vicious criminals.
“Since Friday to the present time, 15 murders have been recorded in our country. It has been a most bloody and brutal weekend.
“We in the UNC have supported the Keith Rowley Government in over 37 pieces of criminal legislation, the latest being the Bail (Amendment) Bill 2024.”
She said that Prime Minister Dr Rowley refuses to install a competent person to lead the Ministry of National Security.
Persad-Bissessar said, “There is no reason to leave Fitzgerald Hinds to continue failing in that crucial role of National Security Minister while hundreds are murdered each year.”
He said, “Whether one politically supports or opposes the UNC, one must acknowledge that brutal violence and murders are out of control under Hinds. Criminals don’t care who is UNC or PNM—everyone is targeted in Trinidad and Tobago.
“Political rivalry in our country can be heated and passionate, but it must always be driven by a sincere love for our country and fellow citizens.
Rowley must act in the best interest of citizens and remove Hinds now as the National Security Minister.
“I extend sincere condolences to the families of all the victims who have been murdered over this violent weekend. My prayers are with you.”
Persad-Bissessar said, “To our citizens, I urge you all to hold strong, and keep the faith: soon a new UNC Government will give you the legal firearms and legislation to level the field and fight back against vicious criminals.
“It is time for our citizens to be given the means to protect themselves because the State cannot protect them. It is now a matter of life or death for our terrified population.”
