WHILE leaking sewage poses a problem for teachers, pupils and staff at the Curepe Presbyterian School, Minister of Education Nyan Gadbsy-Dolly says it remains open.

In response to a question from Opposition Senator Wade Mark in the Upper House on Monday, Gadbsy-Dolly said, “The sewer needs to be repaired. The regional corporation has agreed to pump down the sewer as required so that there is no leak and no health and safety concern for the students.”

She said the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation was doing this in the interim for the school to function.

But parents told AZP News on Monday that they were not sending their children to school in those circumstances.

One parent, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, “I will not be sending my child to school with filth flowing all around.”

Another said that the problems began last week and it has been difficult to get any definite word from the teachers or the principal.

At Augustine MP Kadijah Ameen said in a Facebook post: “Footage showing overflow from cesspit on the compound of Curepe Presbyterian School into the Carpark and the area where students use the washrooms and school taps. While the the defective cesspit has been cordoned off with caution tape, it is difficult to keep children away from the taps or washrooms for the entire day. MP Ameen continues to call for the new school built by the UNC to be opened.”
