THE desecration of Ramleela celebrations in Tarouba is being strongly condemned.
The Traouba Ramleela Celebration Grounds, a sacred space for the community’s religious and cultural festivities, was vandalised on Saturday night. Statutes were defaced and props for the devotional theatrical presentation of Ramleela were burnt.
MP David Lee said, “As a Member of Parliament for Point-a-Pierre I would like to condemn the vile, atrocious, and totally senseless desecration of the Traboula Ramleela Celebration Grounds.”
He said, “I am deeply saddened and angered because each year these Ramleela Celebrations form an integral part of this community’s activities.”
Lee said, “Ramleela Celebrations in Tarouba are part of this community’s DNA as residents invest time, resources and pure dedication to preserve their religious heritage as well as their cultural identity.”
During the Opposition press confernce on Sunday UNC MPs Dr Roodal Moonilal and MP Saddam Hosein also expressed they disgust.
Dr Moonilal said, “It is a very deep concern that the society is now drifting in a direction of intolerance and hate. Part of this world as you know is also consumed with hate and intolerance.”
He said, “It is a very sad day when society reaches this state where churches, monderes, mosques, and religious events are attacked in a manner to suggest hate.”
Dr Moonilal said there was nothing of value that can be stolen at Ramleela Grounds.
