TWO local government councillors who won their seats under a United National Congress (UNC) banner have switched political sides.
They are Sheldon Garcia and Marcus Girdharie.
Their leaving to join the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) did not sit well with their former party with Member of Parliament for Oropouche West Davendranath Tancoo declaring that they could not have the country at heart last Monday.
One councillor also resigned, Samuel Sankar but did not join the PNM.
On Monday, AZP News spoke with the three councillors who resigned.
Girdharie, representative Marabella South/Vistabella said one of the main reasons for his decision was that the UNC lacked a visible plan to actually win the San Fernando City Corporation which his district falls under.
“I did not want to be a successful councillor with inadequate resources,” he said.
Before the news broke publicly, Girdharie informed burgesses of his decision to switch political hats while still offering himself for representation.
He said, “They were very supportive of my decision because they know the work I would have done in the past.”
His note to residents states, “With the establishment of the Local Government Reform, the mandate of providing for you my residents will be even more challenging while in opposition and I am yet to see a plan or strategy by my present party, the UNC to place us in the majority to control SFCC.”
“It is my desire to adequately provide for your needs above and beyond your expectations, I ask you to look at the person I am, what I have already done and give me to opportunity once again to make Marabella South/Vistabella the district that you will feel safe, happy and delighted to live in along with your families,” Girdharie asked of supporters.
Girdharie told AZP News that he has submitted his nomination papers to the PNM with the hope that he will be chosen to represent the same district.
He said he was not aware of anyone else who may have filed nomination papers and was looking forward to be screened by party officials soon.
Garcia promises landslide PNM win
Sheldon “Fish” Garcia is promising to win the Arima Central seat by a landslide for the PNM.
He told AZP News he was screened and selected last Saturday by the UNC’s political nemesis.
Garcia also known as “Fish” said having been a community activist for decades working with children and youth, the electorate in his area were aware of his work.
He also said the PNM was happy to have him rejoin the party. His main reason was also lack of support from the UNC.
When asked what type of support, Garcia responded, “All types of support, especially financial support.”
He said the people will be voting for both person and party in his area.
And Sankar, local government councillor for Kelly Village/Warrenville told AZP News he tendered his resignation from the UNC last month but has not joined a political party as yet contrary to what many may think.
When asked if he would be taking up any political position he said, “I have some offerings but I have not taken up any as yet.”
