OPPOSITION Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar wants international observers for the upcoming local government election.
The United National Congress (UNC) political leader has written to Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley with her request.
Speaking at the UNC Monday night forum at the party’s headquarters in Chaguanas, Persad-Bissessar said her party did not trust the People’s National Movement (PNM) Government.
She said, “I have taken the liberty of writing to the Prime Minister to request or to call upon him to bring in international election observers for the elections.”
To Dr Rowley Persad-Bissessar said, “We do not trust you. We have seen all the irregularities over the years.”
This is not the first time that the Opposition has called for international observers for an election and she said Dr Rowley had no excuse now not to engage them.
She announced that this week, screening will begin for potential candidates as the local government election date was now near following the victory of the Privy Council ruling.
Persad-Bissessar again listed the UNC’s plans for the country should they be elected back into government promising a safer and more educated nation.
