OROPOUCHE West MP Dave Tancoo says that the laws of Trinidad and Tobago must be aligned to stop the abuse of women through technology.
In his message on the observance of International Women’s Day 2023, he said, “Those who abuse technology to harass, intimidate, degrade and threaten women must be held to account. Laws and national security resources must be aligned with this objective.”
He said women were increasingly the targets of cyberattacks, harassment, stalking, non-consensual image sharing, and human trafficking schemes online.
Tancoo added, “Comprehensive gender-based cybercrime regulations are required, and the TTPS Cybercrime Unit needs to be adequate resourced with highly trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment.”
He said ensuring that digital spaces are safe places for everyone, especially women and children, must be a top priority for the government and law enforcement.
Tancoo said, “While we celebrate the accomplishments of women, we must also commit to confronting the challenges and threats to their safety.
“Let us all work together to protect our women in the physical and virtual spaces.”
