West Indies Lose to South Africa in 3 Days

WEST INDIES failed to take advantage of the situation when they bowled out South Africa for 116 in their second innings.

The Caribbean side lost the first Test in Centurion on Thursday despite a valiant 79 from Jermaine Blackwood.

The chief destroyer was Kagiso Rabada who got six West Indies scalps for 50 runs and ensured a South African victory inside three days.

Earlier in the day, Kemar Roach became West Indies’ fifth-highest wicket-taker with his 11th five for , and first away from home since 2017, as he passed Joel “Big Bird” Garner’s tally of 259 wickets.

South Africa opener Aiden Markram top-scored in their second innings with 47.

They were all out for 116 and West Indies went into the dressing room on a high but were disappointed as team mentor Brian Lara and Cricket West Indies Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams looked on.

Wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva seven dismissals in the second innings were all catches. He equalled the record for dismissals in an innings joining fellow West Indies player Jacobs, Wasim Bari of Pakistan, Bob Taylor of England and Ian Smith of New Zealand.

Before lunch, Rabada had Kraigg Brathwaite for a duck and after the break Ramon Reifer was back in the pavilion with an outside edge.

Tagnarine Chanderpaul was out of sorts missing full balls and then top-edging a short bouncer from Marco Jansen.

West Indies fell short by 87 runs having come into the series after a successful tour of Zimbabwe.

Player of the Match was Markram for his century in the first innings and 47 in the second.

South Africa 342 (Markram 115, Elgar 71, Joseph 5 for 81) and 116 (Markram 47, Roach 5 for 47) beat West Indies 212 (Reifer 62, Nortje 5 for36) and 159 (Blackwood 79, Rabada 6 for 50) by 87 runs
