BARBADOS expects to reap 107,000 tonnes of sugar cane as its harvest started on Monday.
This according to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security Indar Weir during a post-Cabinet media briefing at Parliament on Friday.
He said a 13% increase (or an additional 2,558 tonnes) has been forecasted.
Weir said, “The increase in volume is attributed to an increase in acres planted and increased yield because we have now been using hot water-treated canes.”
He said hot-water treatment was specifically used to ward off ratoon stunting disease.
Weir said the Portvale Sugar Factory was projected to produce 5,229 tonnes of sugar and 7,100 tonnes of molasses in in the 2023 harvest.
