A POLICE officer who allegedly assaulted a man at a police post has been charged.
Narindra Neil Beharry attached to the Valencia Police Post was due to appear at the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court on Friday after being charged with Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.
Beharry, 42, of Pinto Road, Arima was charged on Thursday following the advice of Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC.
The charges stem from an incident in which a man alleged that he came to the Valencia Police Post on July 3, 2022, to make a report, but instead was assaulted, a release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) stated.
According to the victim, he met an officer standing outside the police post, who ignored him when he tried to make his report.
The man further stated that when he entered the police post to make the report, the officer he met outside allegedly told him that he was going to impound his vehicle. It was reported to police that when he returned outside to make a phone call, the officer allegedly followed him outside, approached him, and assaulted him by slapping and hitting him about his face and body.
The man sought medical attention and later made a report to the Professional Standards Bureau. and exercises were conducted by the Professional Standards Bureau on Wednesday, in the Eastern Division, which resulted in Beharry’s arrest.
The investigations were spearheaded by Woman Senior Superintendent Suzette Martin, supervised by Superintendent Montrichard and included Sgt Pierre, PC Joshua and PC Marcellin, who laid the charge against the officer.
