THE ruptured pipeline along the Godineau River in south Trinidad is a major blow to many Hindus who are preparing for Divali.

Member of Parliament for Oropouche East Dr Roodal Moonilal is calling the line to be repaired with a sense of urgency.

In a statement on Wednesday, Dr Moonilal said, “The relevant authorities must place greater urgency on solving the two major water issues that have disrupted the supply to areas of South Trinidad on the eve of the Divali festival. I call upon the Ministry of Works and WASA (Water and Sewerage Authority) to work around the clock to return a supply of water to affected communities in south Trinidad in the shortest possible time.”

The rupturing of the vital water line at the Godineau Bridge, Mosquito Creek as well as a huge leak at Mon Repos, San Fernando, were affecting the supply of tens of thousands of residents he said.

Dr Moonilal said, “In addition to the supply cracks impacting all consumers, this is a major blow to Hindus in Oropouche East and other communities who are cleaning their properties in preparation for the Festival of Lights.”

Apart from dealing with the matter with a sense of urgency the authorities must ensure quality control and regular inspections of these and other works so as to avoid future interruptions, the MP added.

He said, “At a time when WASA has committed taxpayers to a US $80 million loan to improve its service, it is unacceptable that it is undertaking such shoddy works that have led to the collapse of its delivery system.”

WASA had issued a press release stating that assessments were being done and that repair works will commence after completion of the assessments.
