MORE teachers than pupils, on a percentage basis, showed up at schools on Monday says Minister of Education Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Labour was granted an injunction by the Industrial Court to prevent members of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) from staying away from schools on Monday to “rest and reflect.”
However, across the country, there were still some schools without teachers and many pupils stayed away, aware that teachers were planning to “rest and reflect.”
Minister of Education Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly shared information with AZP News on Monday afternoon.
At the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) centres, 94% of teachers showed up for duty.
In primary schools, 35.23% of pupils showed up for classes while 72.12% of teachers attended.
At the secondary schools, 72.34% of teachers showed up for duty while 39.80% of pupils attended school.
The Ministry of Education had issued a press release on Sunday, stating that it expected all teachers to abide by the injunction and report for duty on Monday.
The injunction was filed as Government was aware that TTUTA was planning to stay away from duties for a third time in one month, since school re-opened on September 5.
In a video later issued, TTUTA’s president Antonia Tekah-de Freitas urged all teachers to follow the mandate of the injunction and report for duty on Monday.
