A RIVERINE flood alert is in effect.
The yellow level alert was issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) at 9.51 am on Monday and is expected to remain in effect till 12 am on Wednesday.
Communities surrounding the South Oropouche River and its tributaries are expected to be adversely affected. Parts of Western Tobago included communities along the Crooks and Bacolet Rivers are also expected to be affected.
TTMS stated, “The South Oropouche River is very near its capacity and may have already breached its bank in some parts with water spilling into surrounding communities in South Trinidad that are prone to flooding. There is expected to be an increase in the volume of water into this main watercourse with added rainfall from intermittent showers and isolated thunderstorms expected during the course of today.”
“Due to heavy rainfall overnight in Tobago, the Crooks and Bacolet Rivers both overspilled their banks causing flooding in Scarborough,” TTMS added.
