THERE is an increase in Covid-19 patients in hospital.
Principal Medical Officer of Institutions Dr Maryam Abdool-Richards made the announcement at the Ministry of Health virtual conference on Wednesday.
She said, “Over the last week, we have noticed an increase in the hospital admissions.” As of Tuesday, the were 159 patients in hospital and step-down facilities.
Dr Abdool-Richards said from July 13, 2022, there was an increase in the rolling average of confirmed cases. Then on July 23, the Accident and Emergency was increasing, and then on July 28, the hospital occupancy began to increase.”
She said, “Eighty per cent of the patients hospitalised with Covid in the parallel healthcare system were not fully vaccinated.”
She said this trend was represented between July 22, 2021, to July 27, 2022.
However, Dr Abdool-Richards said it also emphasised the need for full vaccination and boosters in high risk groups and were applicable.
She said, “As of this morning, there were 24 persons in the Accident and Emergency departments, 11 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) across the ICU departs in Trinidad as well as Tobago.”
The Covid-19 update for Tuesday, (#1,169) reported 89 new positive cases from samples taken from July 31 to August 1, with one death. The total Covid-19 deaths in T&T stands at 4,054.
